HOW TO TREAT AND PREVENT DIARRHOEA IN DOGS

What is diarrhea?

Diarrhea is unformed or loose stools, usually occurring in larger amounts and/or more often. Diarrhea is not a disease but rather a sign of many different diseases. Diarrhea associated with minor conditions can often be resolved quickly with simple treatment.

However, diarrhea may be the result of serious or life-threatening illnesses such as organ system failure or cancer. Even diarrhea caused by mild illnesses may become serious if treatment is not begun early enough to prevent severe dehydration and electrolyte imbalance.

What causes diarrhea?

1.Dietary indiscretion: Eating too much, eating garbage, or spoiled food. There’s actually a name for it in veterinary circles—“garbage toxicosis” or “garbage gut.”

2. Change in diet: It may take a few days for a dog’s digestive system to adapt to new proteins. That’s why many dog-food manufacturers recommend that you go slow when you switch from one brand of food to another.

3.Food intolerance

4. Allergies

5.Parasites: Most of these will cause illness in puppies or in adults with weak immune systems: Roundworms, Hookworms, Whipworms, Coccidia, Giardia

6.Poisonous substances or plants

7.Infections with common viruses such as: Parvovirus, Distemper, Coronavirus

8.Bacterial infections, such as salmonella

9.Illnesses, such as kidney and liver disease, colitis, inflammatory bowel disease, and cancer

10.Stress or emotional upset

Symptoms and Types of Dog Diarrhea

More water in feces than normal (softer or unformed feces)

May have an increased volume of feces

Fecal accidents

Blood or mucus in the feces

Straining to defecate

Symptoms often associated with diarrhea that can indicate a more severe condition include:

Vomiting

Listlessness

Anorexia (not eating, or eating less)

Depression

Abdominal pain

Fever

Weakness

If your dog has any of these signs, call your veterinarian or the local emergency clinic right away. Blood in the feces even without any other symptoms is also a reason to see your veterinarian immediately.

Treating Diarrhea in Puppies

If the dog is dehydrated, we need to rehydrate quickly.

- In case of mild dehydration, no vomiting can be given orally: Make an electrolyte solution. If the dog does not drink, use a syringe to pump him in the cheek 1-2 ml/kg body weight/hour.

-If diarrhea is accompanied by vomiting: drinking will stimulate the dog to vomit more and more, so water must be supplied by infusion. Parenteral routes: Subcutaneous injection; Abdominal sinus injection; Intravenous

- Types of infusion: Isotonic physiological solution: Saline physiology (NaCl 0.9%), Sweet physiology (Glucose 5%), Lactate ringer; Hypertonic solution: Glucose 10%, 30%; Other additional solutions: Protein (Aminovit, Vimelyte-IV), Minerals (Vime Canlamin, Calcium-Magne), Vitamins (Hematopan-B, K, Babevit, Depancy, Vimekat, ...)

- The amount of infusion: average 10-20 ml/kg body weight (depending on the status of dehydration). To make a correct diagnosis, you must do some tests, pay attention to the examination of the stool because intestinal parasites are often the cause of the trigger for canine digestive tract diseases. Some viral infections do not have a specific treatment. However, antibiotics can be used to control diarrhea and prevent secondary infections.
