ECONOMIC EFFICIENCY FROM THE COMMERCIAL PEARL GROUPER FARMING MODEL

Pearl grouper (also known as hybrid grouper) is currently a strategic marine farming species in Vietnam. With the perfect combination of biological traits from its two parent species, pearl grouper offers a breakthrough economic opportunity for farmers thanks to its fast growth rate and high commercial value.

1. BIOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND OUTSTANDING VALUE

Pearl grouper is the result of crossbreeding between giant grouper (Epinephelus lanceolatus) and tiger grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus). This combination brings outstanding advantages:

  • Resistance: Inherits disease resistance and good environmental adaptability from the giant grouper.
  • Meat quality: Retains the delicious flavor and rich nutritional value (Omega-3, Protein) characteristic of tiger grouper.
  • Growth: After only 8–10 months of farming, the fish reaches a weight of 0.9–1.2 kg, meeting export and high-end restaurant standards.

2. BREED SELECTION TECHNIQUES: THE FOUNDATION OF SUCCESS

In aquaculture, "good seed first, environment second," selecting fingerlings determines 50% of the success of the crop. Farmers should note the following standards:

  • Size: Prioritize uniform fish, 7–10 cm in size.
  • Appearance: Balanced body shape, smooth shiny skin, with no signs of ulcers or parasites.
  • Condition: Fish swim actively, react quickly to sounds, and feed vigorously.

3. CHOOSING THE RIGHT FARMING METHOD

Depending on terrain conditions and investment capital, farmers can choose one of two methods:

  • Sea cage farming: Takes advantage of clean, continuously circulating water, helping fish grow quickly and reducing disease. However, cages must be reinforced firmly before the storm season.
  • Coastal earthen pond farming: Easier to manage environmental parameters and lower investment costs. The ideal stocking density is 1–2 fish/m² to ensure a well-ventilated living environment.

4. NUTRITION AND ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT

To optimize costs, the use of industrial feed is being encouraged, with a feed conversion ratio (FCR) of only 1.5–1.7. This not only helps fish develop evenly but also protects the water environment better than using fresh fish.

Feeding rate: Maintain 3–5% of body weight per day.

Environmental control: Regularly check pH, dissolved oxygen, and salinity, especially after heavy rains or during seasonal transitions.

5. ECONOMIC EFFICIENCY ASSESSMENT

With a stable selling price of VND 150,000–170,000/kg, after deducting fingerling and feed costs, farmers can earn a profit of VND 30,000–60,000/kg. This is a very attractive profit margin compared with other marine species.
