Hà Tĩnh shrimp farmers proactively respond to adverse weather, aiming for a sustainable harvest season.

As weather patterns become increasingly complex, especially with erratic spells of sun and rain, shrimp farming in Ha Tinh is facing many challenges. However, many farmers have proactively implemented appropriate technical measures to protect their shrimp stocks, stabilize pond conditions, and minimize losses, helping ensure production efficiency.

Ha Tinh shrimp farmers proactively respond to adverse weather conditions.

PROACTIVE POND MANAGEMENT – A SOLUTION ADAPTED TO THE WEATHER

In Ha Tinh City, Mr. Truong Quang Tung, an experienced shrimp farmer, shared his concerns as the weather keeps changing, causing pond conditions to fluctuate as well. With 1.3 hectares of shrimp ponds, Mr. Tung has stocked 100,000 white-leg shrimp for nearly two months, now reaching a size of about 75 shrimp/kg – a sensitive stage with many disease risks.

To ensure the safety of his shrimp stock, Mr. Tung regularly checks the ponds and adjusts feed, temperature, and water level appropriately. According to him, hot weather can raise water temperatures, creating favorable conditions for algae and harmful bacteria to develop. In particular, when sunny weather suddenly turns to thunderstorms, shrimp are easily shocked by temperature changes, their resistance declines, and they may contract dangerous diseases such as white feces disease or white spot disease – illnesses that can reduce yield by up to 70%.

Mr. Tung said that frequent water exchange, periodic disinfection, maintaining pond depth at 1.2 meters or more, and increasing bottom aeration are important measures to stabilize the environment. When heavy rain occurs, he uses lime around the pond banks and biological products to keep pH and other environmental indicators stable.

LINKING THE FARMING COMMUNITY – TOGETHER CONTROLLING RISKS

Ha Vooc Aquaculture Cooperative (Ho Do Commune, Ha Tinh City) currently has nearly 50 hectares of shrimp farming area with the participation of 43 households. According to Mr. Truong Quang Loc, the cooperative’s director, all households stock seed on schedule and comply with the recommended technical procedures. However, this year’s intense heat, interspersed with unusual rainfall, has negatively affected pond environments.

Shrimp farmers often visit their ponds regularly.

Some areas in the region have previously been affected by white spot disease and acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease, mainly due to pathogens remaining in the ponds combined with weather fluctuations. In response, the cooperative proactively guides farmers to monitor environmental indicators, treat pond water, and carry out disease prevention measures from the beginning of the season.

EXPERT RECOMMENDATIONS: REDUCING RISKS THROUGH TECHNICAL SOLUTIONS

According to the Ha Tinh Sub-Department of Fisheries, more than 1,500 hectares of brackish-water shrimp have been stocked across the province. Weather forecasts indicate that prolonged heat accompanied by sudden thunderstorms will continue to significantly affect aquaculture. The specialized sector has been closely coordinating with localities, strengthening communication and technical guidance to help farmers proactively protect their ponds.

Some key recommendations include:

  • Monitor temperature and algae density: When algae grow excessively, farmers should control algae by diluting the water, applying lime at night, and combining probiotics and enzymes.
  • Increase aeration time: Especially from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. to stabilize temperature and increase dissolved oxygen at the pond bottom.
  • Cover ponds and adjust water levels: Use shade net covers and raise pond water levels above 1.4 meters to reduce the impact of hot weather.
  • Adjust feeding regime: Reduce feed by 20–30% on very hot days, stop feeding during peak heat, and feed only early in the morning or in the cool of the evening.
  • Boost resistance: Supplement feed with vitamins, minerals, digestive enzymes, and herbs. Avoid overusing antibiotics and use clearly sourced biological products for natural disease prevention.
Depending on weather developments, shrimp farmers will adjust feed, temperature, and water levels in the pond accordingly. In particular, using covers to protect farmed shrimp.

CONCLUSION

In the context of increasingly erratic weather, proactively applying technical measures in pond care and management is a key factor helping Ha Tinh shrimp farmers overcome difficulties, minimize losses, and move toward sustainable development. The support of the specialized sector, together with the awareness of the farming community, provides a solid foundation for building a safe and efficient aquaculture industry in the future.

RECOMMENDATIONS FROM VEMEDIM

Under complicated weather conditions, shrimp are more likely to weaken and develop diseases. Farmers should regularly monitor weather conditions, update environmental warnings, and fully implement technical measures to protect their shrimp stocks. At the same time, it is necessary to strengthen shrimp resistance and maintain stable pond conditions by supplementing products such as Vimekat, Enter-Lactyl, Kill-Algae or Enzymsol,… – effective solutions that help enhance immunity, improve digestion, control algae, and stabilize pond water quality.
