COOPERATIVE LINKAGE: A SUSTAINABLE DIRECTION FOR THE SHRIMP–RICE MODEL IN CÀ MAU

On September 30, Ca Mau Provincial People’s Committee Vice Chairman Le Van Su chaired an online meeting with localities to remove difficulties and obstacles and discuss solutions to effectively implement the province’s key production models, including super-intensive shrimp farming, shrimp–rice farming, and organic rice linked to cooperative development.

According to the plan, Ca Mau will expand 1,500 hectares of super-intensive shrimp farming using recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) technology, a direction considered a breakthrough in improving productivity and protecting the farming environment. In addition, the province encourages residents, cooperative groups, and cooperatives to apply improved extensive shrimp farming models with scientific and technical advances, aiming for an average yield of 550 kg/ha.

As of the end of September 2025, the province’s total shrimp output is estimated at 584,500 tons, exceeding the plan by 9%. This figure reflects the commendable efforts of farmers and relevant authorities, despite many challenges posed by extreme weather and environmental fluctuations.

For the rice sector, the planted area has reached 90% of the plan, with an average yield of 5.97 tons/ha and an estimated output of about 1.68 million tons. Notably, the province is coordinating with Global Organic Clean Agriculture Group Co., Ltd. to implement a high-quality, low-emission rice model, aiming toward organic production and end-of-season product purchasing commitments. The linkage between enterprises and cooperatives is seen as a key solution to help farmers secure stable outlets and sustainably develop Ca Mau’s distinctive shrimp–rice model.

Vice Chairman Le Van Su emphasized that the implementation of 1,500 hectares of RAS super-intensive shrimp farming is a strategic step in agricultural restructuring, toward a modern, efficient, and environmentally friendly production model. He urged sectors, localities, and enterprises to strengthen production linkages, sign clear contracts, and proactively grasp market trends to support people in stable development.

However, localities also reported that the irrigation system remains unsynchronized, and the impacts of storms and price fluctuations are affecting productivity and product quality. In light of this reality, provincial leaders requested units to review and improve production organization models, promote enterprise–cooperative–farmer linkages, and step up communication to raise awareness of the benefits of collective production and high-tech application.

These efforts are expected to create a solid foundation for Ca Mau to develop its shrimp–rice model in a sustainable, efficient, and environmentally friendly direction, continuing to affirm the locality’s position in the country’s aquaculture sector.
