CÀ MAU: MAINTAINING ITS POSITION IN SHRIMP EXPORTS, TOWARD SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

The shrimp farming industry in Cà Mau plays an important role in the local economy, helping increase residents’ incomes and boosting seafood export turnover. Under pressure from disease outbreaks, price fluctuations, and high product quality requirements, developing a sustainable shrimp industry has become a top priority.

POSITIVE CHANGES IN CÀ MAU SHRIMP FARMING

According to Mr. Phan Hoàng Vũ, Director of the Cà Mau Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the pace of innovation and technology adoption in shrimp farming has helped increase productivity and output. By the end of 2024, the brackish-water shrimp farming area reached 278,600 hectares, with output of 242,000 tons, meeting 99.59% of the plan and increasing 4.57% compared with the same period last year. Shrimp exports reached 1.12 billion USD.

The province has over 6,500 hectares of intensive and super-intensive shrimp farming, with more than 7,300 farming households.

Currently, Cà Mau has developed more than 6,500 hectares of intensive and super-intensive shrimp farming, with over 7,300 farming households. Of which:

  • The area of improved extensive shrimp farming reaches 188,000 hectares, with an average yield of 500-550 kg/ha/year.
  • Super-intensive shrimp farming reaches 5,025 hectares, with an average yield of 20.5 tons/ha/year.
  • The area of intensive shrimp farming reaches 1,509 hectares, with a yield of 5-8 tons/ha/year.
  • Over 84,000 hectares of combined extensive shrimp farming, with an average yield of 300-350 kg/ha/year.

In addition, Cà Mau has also developed certified shrimp farming, with 22,590 hectares granted international certifications such as ASC, B.A.P, EU Organic, Canada Organic...

SOLUTIONS TO ENSURE SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION

Disease outbreaks and price fluctuations are major challenges for the shrimp industry. To minimize impacts, the local agriculture sector has implemented proactive measures:

  • Develop annual disease prevention and control plans.
  • Implement seasonal disease monitoring and forecasting.
  • Strengthen inspections and provide timely support to farmers when disease outbreaks occur.

In addition, to help shrimp farmers stabilize production, Cà Mau has promoted the application of new technologies and developed organic, ecological, and shrimp-rice farming models.

With appropriate orientations and policies, Cà Mau continues to maintain its leading position in shrimp production and export, affirming its brand in the international market.
