In the mountainous district of Tiên Yên, Quảng Ninh Province, farmers are gradually applying science and technology to develop sustainable shrimp farming, helping enhance the competitiveness of their products in the market.
THE “2 ANIMALS, 1 PLANT” MODEL: A STEP TOWARD GREATER EFFICIENCY
Over the past years, Tiên Yên District has successfully implemented the “2 animals, 1 plant” model (chicken, shrimp, medicinal plants), shaping concentrated production areas toward commodity-oriented farming. Among them, shrimp farming has become a key economic sector thanks to its potential to “triple profits.” However, factors such as climate change, polluted pond environments, and unscientific management have led to major risks. Many farmers have had to “hand over their red books to shrimp” after suffering heavy losses.
TRANSFORMING SHRIMP FARMING MODELS: AN EFFECTIVE SOLUTION
Faced with these challenges, many shrimp farms in Đồng Rui Commune have switched from square ponds to lined circular ponds.
Circular-pond farming technology combined with oxygen machines helps save space, reduce investment costs, and limit environmental pollution. This farming method also makes shrimp management and care easier, ensuring quality and uniformity.
Mr. Lý Kim Bảo, a typical shrimp farmer in Hải Lạng Commune, invested in converting from a 2,000m2 large pond to smaller 500m2 ponds with roofs and covering film. By applying a three-stage shrimp farming technique, Mr. Bảo has seen increased output and significantly reduced risks.
SUSTAINABLE AQUACULTURE CLUB: A NEW APPROACH
To support farmers, the Tiên Yên District Sustainable Aquaculture Club officially launched on 18/10 with 52 members, mostly shrimp farmers in the area.
By joining the club, members can learn from one another, receive technology transfer, and apply shrimp farming processes based on biological balance, without using chemicals or antibiotics. The club aims to achieve ASC and BAP standards, contributing to building a responsible shrimp-farming community that protects the environment and ecosystem.
THE FUTURE OF SHRIMP FARMING
According to Mr. Lý Văn Giểng, Chairman of the Tiên Yên District Farmers’ Association, science and technology are the key to promoting sustainable production. The connection among farmers will strengthen the sharing of experience and mutual support. The Sustainable Aquaculture Club is not only a destination, but also the starting point of a new journey in developing shrimp farming in Quảng Ninh.
