KIEN GIANG: INCREASING SHRIMP PRODUCTION THROUGH HIGH-TECH APPLICATIONS

During the 2020–2025 period, aquaculture in Kien Giang Province recorded impressive growth in both area and output, especially in brackish-water shrimp farming. According to the Kien Giang Sub-Department of Fisheries and Fisheries Surveillance, the province’s total aquaculture area increased from 270,590 ha in 2020 to 325,000 ha (projected for 2025). Corresponding production also rose sharply from 264,105 tons to 410,300 tons.

Of this, the area for brackish-water shrimp farming increased from 134,235 ha to about 137,050 ha, while production rose from 92,490 tons to 155,000 tons. These results were achieved thanks to a positive shift from traditional farming methods to industrial intensive farming, applying high technology in production.

Notably, intensive and semi-industrial shrimp farming models in Kien Giang have made remarkable progress. While in 2020 the farming area was only 3,685 ha with an average yield of 8.4 tons/ha and total output of 31,000 tons, by 2025 the area had increased to 5,000 ha, yield reached 12.6 tons/ha, and output rose to 63,000 tons.

According to the orientation toward 2030, Kien Giang Province will expand the area of industrial and semi-industrial intensive shrimp farming to 6,370 ha, with projected output reaching 78,480 tons, accounting for about 50% of the province’s total farmed shrimp production.

These positive results have been achieved by promoting the application of advanced shrimp farming models such as recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), Biofloc technology, semi-biofloc, multi-stage farming combined with microorganisms for environmental treatment, along with the application of IoT technology in pond management. In addition, the province also encourages the development of shrimp farming models meeting VietGAP, GlobalGAP, BAP, ASC... standards, linked to traceability and farming area codes to meet the strict requirements of export markets.

Thanks to systematic steps and a clear orientation, Kien Giang is gradually affirming its position as one of the country’s leading localities in the development of high-tech aquaculture.
