Lam Dong Province is focusing on expanding dairy cattle farming in areas with suitable land, climate, and soil conditions, thereby increasing the value of the livestock sector in the province’s overall agricultural structure.
MAINTAINING AN AVERAGE DAIRY HERD GROWTH OF 7.3% PER YEAR
According to the Lam Dong Department of Agriculture and Environment, over the next five years, the province will continue developing dairy cattle farming in key communes and wards including Don Duong, D’ran, Ka Do, Quang Lap, Hiep Thanh, Duc Trong, Tan Hoi, Cat Tien, Cat Tien 2, and Cat Tien 3. At the same time, it will expand into other areas with strong new potential and advantages such as Da Teh, Dinh Van (Lam Ha District), and Quang Son.
The target is to maintain an average dairy herd growth rate of 7.3% per year, with dairy cattle in households increasing by about 5.5%, while those in enterprises and farms increasing by about 10.6%. By 2030, the province’s total dairy herd is expected to reach about 41,170 head, with total fresh milk output meeting safety quality standards estimated at 161,758 tons per year. More than 95% of fresh milk output will be consumed through value-chain linkage contracts.
PROMOTING CIRCULAR LIVESTOCK FARMING AND ENVIRONMENTAL TREATMENT
Mr. Pham Phi Long, Head of the Lam Dong Sub-Department of Livestock Production and Animal Health, said that under the program to expand dairy farming areas, the state budget will support the construction of 15 models applying circular livestock farming technical advances in 13 communes and wards.
In addition, small- and medium-scale livestock farms in 9 communes and wards will receive support to build 10 biogas production facilities. Furthermore, 50 livestock establishments in the area will also be supported with livestock waste treatment products, helping reduce environmental pollution and improve production efficiency.
STRENGTHENING TRAINING AND TECHNICAL TRANSFER
According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment, Lam Dong Province encourages the formation of dairy farms applying technical advances, accessing new breeding technologies, and practicing circular livestock production processes toward sustainability. At the same time, it will promote the development of fresh milk consumption chains to stabilize productivity and profits for livestock farmers.
During the 2026–2030 period, the Department of Agriculture and Environment will organize training for 22 cattle artificial insemination technicians for localities; at the same time, it will open 15 training classes to transfer new dairy cattle farming technical procedures to livestock farmers in communes and wards.
IMPLEMENTING 3 KEY GROUPS OF SOLUTIONS
Along with the above activities, the Department of Agriculture and Environment will take the lead, in coordination with relevant departments, sectors, and the People’s Committees of communes and wards, in implementing three groups of solutions to expand dairy farming each year.
First, enterprises will be encouraged to import high-yield cattle breeds suitable for the province’s natural conditions, prioritizing the selection and breeding of purebred HF dairy cows with high milk yield and quality. Herd development will be carried out mainly through artificial insemination, using high-yield bull semen and sexed semen, combined with recording and monitoring the production and reproductive performance of each individual.
Second, part of the inefficient cropland area will be converted to growing grass, silage corn, and raw material crops for animal feed; at the same time, by-products and residues from crop production and food processing will be utilized to formulate mixed feed rations, ensuring balanced and stable nutrition for each cattle group.
Third, cooperation and linkages among enterprises, cooperatives, cooperative groups, and farmers in the production, processing, and consumption of fresh milk will be expanded. In particular, enterprises will play the core role in production orientation, application of science and technology, brand building and management, as well as product consumption organization.
The synchronized implementation of these three solution groups is expected to help dairy cattle production value account for 14–15% of the livestock sector’s value structure, making a positive contribution to the overall development of Lam Dong Province’s agricultural sector by 2030.
