In recent years, environmental pollution from livestock waste has received increasing attention, especially in rural areas. In response to this situation, many localities in Tuyen Quang Province have implemented circular livestock farming models, initially bringing clear results, helping reduce pollution and moving toward sustainable agricultural development.
The family of Mr. Do Van Kien in Phu Thinh Hamlet, Yen Son Commune, raises about 300 chickens each year. Since 2023, after applying the technique of raising chickens on thick biological bedding, using straw and rice stubble after harvest combined with microbial preparations, the coop has remained well-ventilated and odor-free, the flock has grown well, and labor has been significantly reduced. After each flock, the bedding layer is continued to be used as organic fertilizer for crops, helping cut chemical fertilizer costs by about 50%.
In addition, the circular livestock farming model combined with vermiculture, applied by Mr. Duong Van Thanh in My Lam Ward, has also brought positive results. This is one of the five techniques of the project “Propagating and mobilizing farmers to treat waste in Vietnam, contributing to the international community’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions”, which has been implemented since 2023.
According to Mr. Pham Hong Hanh, Chairman of the Farmers’ Association of My Lam Ward, the vermiculture model makes use of buffalo and cattle waste as feed for earthworms, thereby creating feed sources for chickens and fish, helping reduce the amount of waste released into the environment by more than 60% compared with before.
Over the past three years, Farmers’ Associations at all levels have built 650 models and mobilized 8,104 households to participate in implementing the project’s techniques; the number of participating households has increased by 35%, and the rate of straw burning has decreased by 50%. People’s awareness of environmental protection has changed significantly.
Assessing the effectiveness of implementation, Ms. Chu Thi Ngoc Diep, Chairwoman of the Provincial Farmers’ Association, affirmed that the circular livestock farming model is a suitable direction in line with the goals of green agriculture and circular economy development, contributing to higher incomes and improved quality of life for rural residents.
