TIEN GIANG: PROMOTING PIG FARMING DEVELOPMENT UNDER A MODERN FARM MODEL

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Tien Giang Province, the total pig herd in the province currently stands at more than 312,000 head, an increase of about 24,000 head compared with the same period last year — equivalent to a rise of nearly 4%.

The localities with the largest pig herds include Cai Be District with more than 60,000 head, Go Cong Tay District with over 58,000 head, and Cho Gao District with around 52,000 head. These are areas where pig farming has developed strongly, and farmers have been and are continuing to step up investment toward large-scale production, applying the closed-farm model to create high-quality products that ensure food safety and environmental protection.

Currently, pig farming in Tien Giang is clearly recovering, not only contributing to increased agricultural commodity supply but also creating more jobs and improving income for livestock-raising households. In the context of sharp increases in live pig prices, farmers are earning high profits, which presents an opportunity for the province to accelerate the transition from small-scale livestock raising to concentrated farm-scale production.

The province encourages people to invest in high-tech applications such as building cooled barns, controlling automatic feeding systems with computer software, and applying science and technology to livestock production processes in order to improve productivity, product quality, and protect the environment and public health. The development orientation focuses on biosecurity and disease safety, while effectively controlling sources of disease-free, high-quality breeding stock.

At the same time, the province continues to coordinate with localities to effectively implement the Master Plan for Disease Prevention and Control in livestock herds; advise livestock farmers to proactively vaccinate, strengthen disease surveillance, and carry out the annual “Month of Sanitation, Disinfection, and Sterilization”.

Despite harsh natural conditions, Tan Phu Dong District — home to saline-intruded islets — is still promoting livestock development adapted to climate change. The district currently has a total pig herd of more than 11,000 head, with many integrated crop-livestock (VAC) models delivering clear results.

A typical example is Mr. Le Van Truc (Phu Thanh Commune), who converted 5 hectares of inefficient rice land into specialized lemongrass cultivation, 2 hectares of coconut planting, and invested in pig raising (50 head) and goat raising (15 head). This diversified model provides stable income, bringing him an annual net profit of more than VND 600 million.

Also in Tan Phu Dong District, Mr. Duong Tan Si (Tan Thoi Commune) is developing a closed-farm model using modern technology, with herd size at times reaching 400 head. According to him, since the beginning of 2025, live pig prices have risen sharply, ranging from VND 8.2–8.3 million per quintal (100 kg), up by VND 2–2.5 million per quintal compared with last year. At this price, each 120-kg market pig brings farmers a profit of VND 4–5 million per head.

In Phu An Commune (Cai Lay District), Mr. Truong Van A has also succeeded in shifting from small-scale livestock raising to closed-farm pig production. He invested in raising breeding sows, keeping piglets for fattening, and each year sells hundreds of pigs, earning hundreds of millions of dong in profit. Thanks to this, he has built a solid livelihood and become a model of wealth creation from livestock farming in the flood-control area in the western part of the province.

Tien Giang Province is showing positive progress in the development of its pig farming sector, with the right direction being modern farm models that apply technology and ensure biosecurity and disease safety. This will be a solid foundation for the local agricultural sector in the coming time.
