EPIDEMIC DEVELOPMENTS

According to information from the Provincial Sub-Department of Livestock Production and Animal Health, on February 3, 2025, foot-and-mouth disease was detected in several livestock households in Khanh Yen town, with 44 infected animals. On February 5, 2025, in Bao Ha commune (Bao Yen district), 27 pigs were also found showing signs of the disease. Immediately afterward, the authorities quickly stepped in to identify the cause and implement outbreak containment measures.

The cause was determined to be infected pigs from another locality being transported into the slaughter area, leading to spread within the herd. However, thanks to close monitoring and effective disease control measures, the situation has improved markedly.

DISEASE CONTROL MEASURES

As soon as the outbreak was detected, the authorities and veterinary sector simultaneously implemented containment measures, helping to control the disease in a timely manner:

  • In Khanh Yen town: Disinfection and sterilization were carried out at the outbreak site and surrounding area; livestock health was closely monitored; the transport of animals and animal products was controlled; slaughtering and trading of animal products at risk of infection were temporarily suspended.
  • In Bao Ha commune: Livestock households were required to isolate animals showing signs of disease; slaughtering and trading of sick animals were strictly prohibited; dead animals were disposed of in accordance with regulations; and disinfection and barn sanitation were intensified.
The risk of foot-and-mouth disease occurring in livestock herds is very high.

PROACTIVE AND EFFECTIVE DISEASE PREVENTION

Although the outbreak has been brought under control, proactive prevention remains an important factor in protecting livestock herds. The Provincial Sub-Department of Livestock Production and Animal Health recommends that farmers properly implement the following measures:

  • Fully vaccinate against foot-and-mouth disease as instructed.
  • Maintain barn hygiene and regularly disinfect the facilities.
  • Monitor livestock health and immediately report any abnormal signs to veterinary officers.
  • Comply with regulations on the transport, slaughter, and trading of animal products to reduce the risk of disease spread.

At the same time, the veterinary sector is also strengthening inspections and guiding residents to use veterinary medicines and livestock feed in accordance with regulations, ensuring the safety of animals and the livestock environment.

With the proactive efforts of the authorities and the high awareness of livestock farmers, foot-and-mouth disease will no longer be a concern, helping the livestock sector develop stably and sustainably!
