RAISING DUCKS ON FLOORING: A SAFE, EFFICIENT LIVESTOCK SOLUTION

RAISING DUCKS ON FLOORING: A SAFE, EFFICIENT LIVESTOCK SOLUTION

At Xuyen Moc Meat Duck Cooperative (HTX), Ba Ria – Vung Tau Province, the raised-floor duck farming model is being widely implemented, especially with fast-growing, lean meat duck breeds. This method not only ensures environmental hygiene and effective disease control but also improves economic efficiency for farmers.

INCREASING PRODUCTIVITY, REDUCING DISEASE

A typical example is the model of Mr. Nguyen Huu Thong (Phu Vinh Hamlet, Hoa Hiep Commune, Xuyen Moc District). With more than 1,000 m² of barns, Mr. Thong is currently raising 5,000 meat ducks using the raised-floor method. Previously, he raised ducks in fields and on dirt floors, but disease control was difficult and economic efficiency was not high.

After attending technical training and visiting practical models, in 2024 Mr. Thong decided to switch to raised-floor duck farming and join the cooperative. The results have been very positive: instead of raising only 2 batches per year, he can now raise 4–5 batches, shortening the farming period from 70 days to 45–50 days per batch. Each duck reaches a weight of 3.3–3.5 kg at sale. On average, he sells more than 20,000 ducks per year, earning a profit of about 250 million VND after expenses.

In particular, the barn system is always kept dry and well-ventilated. Mr. Thong uses the waste from the raised floor as feed for fish and fertilizer for the orchard, contributing to a circular, environmentally friendly production model.

DEVELOPING A SUSTAINABLE AND CONNECTED MODEL

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Trung – Chairman of the Board of Directors and Director of Xuyen Moc Meat Duck Cooperative, the raised-floor duck farming model helps reduce barn construction costs because there is no need to invest in a complicated cage system. At the same time, the cooperative is using duck breeds with stable selling prices and easy marketability, providing stable income for farming households.

The cooperative currently has 5 members, raising ducks in two farm areas in Hoa Hiep Commune with a total area of over 6 hectares, on a scale of nearly 90,000 ducks per year. The cooperative has been supported by the Department of Agriculture and Environment to implement a linked-chain project for commercial ducks. Cooperative members have signed linkage contracts with 4 companies in the chain—from supplying breeds, feed, and agricultural inputs to purchasing the final products.

On average, the cooperative sells more than 5,000 ducks per month. Profit reaches 10–15 million VND per 1,000 ducks after expenses. The farming process is carried out strictly, including adjusting feed rations, vaccinating on schedule, and regularly disinfecting the barns.

ENCOURAGED BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES TO EXPAND

Mr. Le Hong Tuan – Vice Chairman of Hoa Hiep Commune People’s Committee, said that the raised-floor duck farming model has brought clear results. With stable consumption links from feed companies, farmers can feel secure about restocking and expanding production. This is also one of the models in the value-added and food safety chain that Ba Ria – Vung Tau Province is orienting for development through 2025, with a vision to 2030.

The locality is actively encouraging small-scale livestock households to join the linkage chain, making effective use of low-lying land areas, thereby promoting the sustainable development of the duck farming industry and improving residents’ incomes.
