CHARACTERISTICS AND CULTURAL VALUE
Dong Tao commune is located near the Red River dike, about 20 km from Hanoi, and is famous for the “royal tribute” chicken breed.
According to legend, Dong Tao chicken was once a dish reserved only for kings and nobles. With its large legs and firm meat, Dong Tao chicken is considered a prized delicacy, especially popular during the Lunar New Year.
PRODUCTION TRANSFORMATION TO MEET MARKET DEMAND
In recent years, the consumption of Dong Tao chicken has faced many difficulties due to its large size and the challenge of preservation. To overcome this, local people have creatively developed processed products such as chicken sausage, salt-cured chicken, and chicken gizzards. These products not only retain the distinctive flavor but are also convenient for transport and year-round use.
Mr. Giang Tuan Vu, one of the pioneers in processing Dong Tao chicken, said that shifting to processed products has significantly increased sales volume. Many products have been packaged and frozen, ensuring freshness when they reach consumers.
ORGANIC FARMING AND TECHNOLOGY APPLICATION
People in Dong Tao have shifted to organic farming, making use of natural feed sources such as rice bran, soybean residue, and green vegetables to raise chickens, helping increase resistance and reduce disease. Poultry farmers are also applying new technologies in breeding and processing, such as cold housing, temperature sensors, and artificial insemination, to improve product quality.
BOOSTING THE MARKET THROUGH DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION
To expand the market, local authorities encourage poultry farmers to adopt digital transformation, from digitizing production processes to promoting products through online platforms such as social media and e-commerce marketplaces. These activities not only help enhance the image of Dong Tao chicken but also make the product more accessible to customers at home and abroad.
COOPERATION AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Mr. Le Quang Thang, Director of the Dong Tao Chicken Farming and Trading Cooperative, said that linking poultry households into a cooperative will create conditions to expand production scale and invest in modern equipment. As a result, the quality and output of Dong Tao chicken will continue to improve, bringing greater economic benefits to households.
FUTURE PROSPECTS
With the attention and support of the authorities, along with new advances in production and processing, Dong Tao chicken is gradually reaching the international market, affirming its position as a specialty not only of Hung Yen but also of Vietnam on the world culinary map.
